What Koraput is like

Cool air, red soil, terraced valleys and long views. The town itself is small and useful: a railway station, hotels, the Jagannath temple known as Sabara Srikhetra and the Tribal Museum. Everything else is a drive away, which is why one comfortable vehicle for the whole group matters more here than in most places.

How many days

  • 1 day: the town temple and museum in the morning, Deomali in the afternoon, Kolab at sunset. Long but doable.

Getting here

Most groups arrive by overnight train. From Bhubaneswar the Hirakhand Express reaches Koraput in the morning. From Kolkata, direct trains towards Jagdalpur stop at Koraput, or you fly to Visakhapatnam and continue by road or the scenic Araku line. Jeypore has an airport too: IndiaOne Air flies from Bhubaneswar most days and from Visakhapatnam daily, and OSRTC and private buses run overnight from Bhubaneswar and through the day from Visakhapatnam. Good to know

  • Ghat roads are winding. Groups with motion-sick travellers should keep them in the front rows.
  • Sunrise at Deomali means leaving Koraput around 4:30 am. Sunset is the easier option.
  • Onukadelli market runs on Thursdays only. If it matters to you, plan the week around it.
  • Mobile coverage drops in the valleys. Download offline maps and tell people at home.
